Macaroni Grill review and giveaway

OK, I usually love to cook. I do all the cooking in our family and I love to try out new recipes and old favorites. But, for some reason, during this pregnancy the cooking drive has left me. I just don't feel totally up to it and so I've found myself relying on some boring stand-bys and looking forward to Friday take-out pizza each week.

It will pass, I'm sure. At least I hope so!

Anyway, I was invited to test out the new Macaroni Grill frozen meals and even though I'm not normally a frozen meal kind of mama, I said yes because I need some inspiration! And a break from cooking :-)

I received a package of the Basil Parmesan Chicken complete dinner for two. The dinner is made with "grilled white meat chicken, broccoli florets and tomatoes with cavatappi pasta tossed in a flavorful creamy basil parmesan sauce. It arrived a few days before my husband, son and I were taking off on a short road trip and I thought it might be a perfect meal for us to take along (we were traveling in the evening). So, that's what we did. I cooked up the dinner according to the directions (very easy -- put the contents in a pan, add milk, cook for 15 or so minutes) and then divided up into travel containers and took it with us.

About 2 hours in to our trip, we stopped for dinner and I pulled out the Basil Parmesan Chicken. We had an enjoyable, sane dinner (while those around us were waiting in line for over-priced fast food) at the rest stop. After we finished, my husband told me the dinner was really good and thanked me for making it. Ha, ha! I told him it was a frozen meal and he was completely surprised. Since he had come home from work and seen the meal simmering on the stove, and since it tasted so good, he thought it was a product of my hard labor! Maybe I should have let him believe that . . . :-)

We liked the dinner. It was the right amount for two people, although you would probably want to serve it with a side salad to round it out.

If you would like to try out the Macaroni Grill meals, pop over to their web site and download a coupon for $1.50 off. Or enter my giveaway!

One lucky reader can win one of the frozen dinners to try out! The meal will be sent via FedEx, packaged in dry ice.

Somnio information

So, I wrote about how much I like my Somnio running shoes in my review and my recent giveaway. I think they're great! Unfortunately, they can't be found at running stores as easily as some of the other major brands. People might have a hard time finding them. In fact, I had to be fitted online for the shoes because none of my local stores carry them.

To help correct that, Somnio has created a letter for interested runners to take to their favorite stores. So, if you are interested in checking out Somnio, but your local running store doesn't carry them, download this letter.

Good luck!

Jakfish review and giveaway

During my first pregnancy, I relied baggy shorts and regular maternity t-shirts for my workout attire. I walked, practiced yoga and worked out with the Kathy Smith videos in less than flattering outfits, for sure.

This time around, I was fortunate to have some maternity active wear to try out, courtesy of Jakfish. Jakfish is a relatively new company that makes "performance clothing for active pregnant women." They're a small operation located in Vermont and you can learn more about them here.
Steph from Jakfish sent me an Adina tank and a Zander skort to try out. I've worn them both on several runs and walks and I give them a big thumbs up! Both are made from Polartec Power Stretch material that is light, wicking and comfortable. I'm especially fond of the skort. The shorts under the skirt are longer than most of the shorts under running skirts and they don't ride up one bit. Not at all. I have another running skirt that I really like as well, but the under shorts never stay put. To me, that's a drag.

I've worn the skort with the band below my belly and pulled up on it and it is comfortable both ways. The fit is excellent and it is even flattering -- a huge plus in maternity wear!

As for the Adina tank, I have only good things to say. The length fully covers my bulging bump and the overall fit is flattering as well. It hugs my belly, but isn't tight. And, best of all, it doesn't flair out at the bottom the way some maternity tanks do. I don't know about you but that whole tent look just isn't for me.

The giveaway!

If you are pregnant, thinking about pregnancy sometime in the future, or you know a preggo that you'd like to hook up, this giveaway is for you! One lucky reader will win an Adina tank (we can be twins!) and a pair of the Quinn capris.

I recently opted to take part in BlogHer's The Big Deal over on my other site and wanted to let everyone know. BlogHer and HauteLook have teamed up to offer daily shopping deals, which are available through an ad link on the right-hand sidebar on my other site. The ad looks like this:

SCAPE sunscreen review

I've been quite the slacker-blogger. Several months ago, the folks at SCAPE contacted me to review their new sunscreen line and I agreed. But, after trying it out I just hadn't gotten around to actually posting my review. I hope "better late than never" is true in this case!

I tried out the regular sunscreen (pictured above), the face stick and the lip balm. Of the three, I liked the regular sunscreen the most. With it's SPF of 30, I would have expected it to be a little thicker than it was and I was pleasantly surprised that it glided on smoothly and well. My family and I used the sunscreen while on a week's vacation when we were outside more than we were in. And, during that time, I wore it when I ran a race and, overall, it worked very well!

I also tried the lip balm and I have to be honest: I didn't love it. The texture was fine but there was something unsettling about the scent and taste. I can't exactly pinpoint what it was other than I was not expecting the balm to have a taste at all so the fact that it did was disconcerting. It wasn't wholly minty or wholly fruity it was just . . . odd. So, I don't think the lip balm is for me. But, for those of you who don't mind a little flavor, the texture of the lip balm was pretty good.

Now, I'm a big proponent of sunscreen use so I think the fact that there is another product on the market, designed specially for athletes, is great. Sunscreen that is waterproof and is key for those summer workouts!

Review disclosure: I received free products from SCAPE for the purpose of this review. I was not compensated in any way and the opinions expressed are entirely my own.

Box Tops for Education $25 gift card giveaway

I may not have a kid in school yet, but I do know about the General Mills Box Tops for Education program that helps schools earn much-needed cash. People buy cereal or whatever, they clip the little Box Tops for Education label on the package and then turn it in to the school coordinator and viola! money for the school (OK, so there may be some steps in between but you get the picture . . . )

So, it's a good program and I'm all for supporting schools and education programs. When I was asked to write about the program -- specifically Wal-Mart's bonus Box Tops offer -- and host a giveaway to go along with it, I agreed right away!

Now through August 30th (or while supplies last), Wal-Mart is offering specially marked packages of participating products with 4 box tops on them. Bonus! That means for every box top you clip, you can give $.40 to your school! Woo hoo!

My son is a big Cheerios kid and both Honey Nut Cheerios and Multi-Grain Cheerios are part of the bonus box tops program. And since we also eat a lot of tacos around here, I was happy to learn that the Old El Paso Hard & Soft Taco Kit is part of it, too. I had always thought the program was just for cereal but it isn't -- in addition to the taco kit, you can clip box tops from products like Kleenex, Ziploc bags and Nature Valley granola bars.

You can check out all of the products that are in the bonus program here (PDF). Lots of options!

So . . . how would you like to win a $25 Wal-Mart gift card to get in on the box tops action? You'd like to, huh? Well, here's how you can:

To enter:

Leave me a comment and let me know what General Mills Box Tops item you would purchase with your gift card.

Additional entries:

As always, you can gain a few additional entries (leave one comment per entry for the additional ones to count):
  • Follow this blog or my other blog, or let me know that you already do (leave a comment)
  • Link to this giveaway from your blog (leave a comment)
  • Become a fan of The Happy Runner on Facebook, or let me know that you already are (leave a comment)
  • Link to this giveaway from Facebook or Twitter (do as often as you'd like, just leave a comment each time)
The giveaway will run through 11:59pm EST on Thursday, August 12, 2010 and the winner will be chosen using random.org and posted on Friday.

Good luck!

EDITED TO ADD: Gift card is good only in U.S.

Here's Lisa's comment that she left on the post about proudest fitness achievements:

my proudest fitness moment happened in 2005 - when i decided that every day that i woke up and felt good, i would get out and move my body. it was a life changing moment. you won't find race results for me prior to that...

Congratulations, Lisa! And keep moving that body! ;-)
