Eggland's Best eggs review and giveaway.

As a runner and a busy mom, I have been known to rely on eggs -- in the form of frittatas or as hard-boiled additions to hearty salads -- for quick, protein-packed dinners. So, when I was contacted to try out Eggland's Best eggs, I said yes right away.

Then I separated, frothed, beat, baked and ate!

I found the Eggland's Best eggs to be quite fresh. They separated easily and none of the eggs stuck to the shell (it's happened!), which usually tells me an egg isn't very fresh. The egg whites frothed up quickly and the recipes I made with the eggs tasted good.

But, with eggs, one of the most important aspects is the nutritional value. Here's where Eggland's Best eggs really shine.

Compared to ordinary eggs, Eggland's Best eggs deliver higher levels of important nutrients like vitamin A, D, E, B2 and B12, along with lower levels of saturated fat and cholesterol. Each egg also contains 115mg of Omega-3, compared to 37mg in most regular eggs. I'm trying to increase the amount of Omega-3 that my family eats so this was good news. I've also been supplementing our vitamin D intake and each Eggland's Best egg contains 80IUs of D, compared to 18IUs in most regular eggs. The overall enhanced nutritional values of these eggs really appeals to me. It's one more way that I can improve my family's diet -- and an easy one at that!

You can read more about the nutritional facts here.

Overall, I was happy with the eggs and impressed with how nutritious they are. I think you would like them, too!

Champion gear review and giveaway!

I was fortunate to receive a big box of Champion running gear to review recently. When I got the box, I was surprised that it included so many awesome pieces: A fleece jacket, a long-sleeve running shirt, running shorts and a sports bra. What a bounty!

And you can be sure I put the gear to use right away. So here's what I thought:

The sports bra

OK, first, the color was awesome. It's a flashy turquoise that I just love!

The photo doesn't do the color justice. It's just plain fun.

Second, the fit was perfect. I was sent a medium, which worked well to hold me in place while still remaining comfortable. Third, the material felt nice and wicked moisture well. The bra is made from Champion's double-dry material. I have not had any chafing with this bra and it has held up well through the few washes I've done. Total thumbs-up on the bra!

The fleece jacket

Another winner. I loooooooove this fleece jacket! I mean, I LOVE it!

Don't ask me why I am making such a weird face -- I have no idea. And, yes, that is the wallpaper in the bathroom. It was there when we moved in and it is horrible. And yet it remains . . .

OK, back to the jacket. Here's the thing about me and jackets: I have broad(ish) shoulders and long(ish) arms. They combine to make it so many, many jackets (and regular long-sleeved tops) don't fit well. The shoulders are often too narrow and the sleeves too short. It is a real problem. But, with the fleece jacket it hasn't been a problem. I received a medium in the jacket and the arms are plenty long. The jacket also fit well on the bottom (that ol' hip/butt area) when zipped up. Sometimes jackets can be too tight at the bottom but this one isn't.

Check out the zipper cover on the neck. I thought this was a cool feature, making the jacket comfortable to wear when zipped all the way. Also, the fleece is right up there with the softest fleece I've ever worn. Truly.

The long-sleeved running shirt

Yup, another winner. The one I was sent was deep purple, in medium/large.

The top is made from a comfy, stretchy double-dry fabric and it fit well: Neither too tight nor too loose, but definitely fitted. The length was good for me and I liked the dip of the v-neck. The kicker, though, is that the arms were long enough.

Look at that length! That never happens for me! Love it.

The shorts

Bummer. These are just . . . well, these shorts are not for me. They are short shorts. Short, clingy shorts. Short, clingy, cute-perky-girl shorts. Not running mama shorts. Or, at least, not this running mama shorts! I couldn't even wear them out of the house. They are just made for a different sort of runner. Maybe they are made for you? Maybe. Just not me.

But, hey three out of four items rocked, so that's great!

Thank you so much, Champion, for letting me try your gear!

And . . . thanks for sponsoring this giveaway. Yes, that's right. I have some Champion gear to giveaway.

The giveaway

Champion will send a pink fleece (in size medium, like the one pictured above) and a purple long-sleeved running shirt (size m/l, again, like the one pictured above) to one lucky winner! So, if you win, you'll win the same gear I have, which means we'll be twins. And who wouldn't want to be my twin? Ha :-)

To enter:

As usual, to enter just leave me a comment and tell me you want in.

A Year of Sport Travel review and giveaway

Cheese rolling.
Cow-chip throwing.
Wimbledon.
Empire State Building run up.

These are just a few of the sports included in Lonely Planet's book, A Year of Sport Travel. Organized by month and week, the book covers internationally renowned competitions alongside intriguing local passions to provide readers with an outline to get their sports fix while traveling the globe.

The book is full of interesting color photos of each event along with statistics and relevant information. There were many sports in this book that I had never heard of so I found the book interesting simply for the introduction to the various sports. I, unfortunately, don't do much traveling but I could see that a book like this would have a lot of appeal to someone who likes to see the world.

To buy:

A Year of Sport Travel is available for $16.99 on the Lonely Planet web site. You can also buy it and other Lonely Planet books at retailers like Amazon and your local book store.

To win:

Lonely Planet was kind enough to send me a copy of the book to share with one lucky reader. To enter, leave me a comment. That's it -- super easy!

Additional entries (leave one comment per entry for the additional ones to count):

  • Link to this giveaway from your blog (leave a comment)
  • Post about this giveaway on Facebook (leave a comment)
  • Become a fan of The Happy Runner on Facebook (leave a comment)
  • Tell me what super-cool sporting event you've been to (leave a comment)
This giveaway will run through 11:59pm EST on Monday, February 8, 2010. The winner will be chosen using random.org and posted on Tuesday.

Good luck!

Mom's Best Naturals review and giveaway

Today, I bring you breakfast. Have you had yours yet? I hope so! You know what they say, after all: Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. So, eat up.

And to help you eat up, I'm giving away some cereal. But first, the review.

I received two boxes of Mom's Best Naturals cereal to try out. One was the Sweetened Wheat-fuls and the other was the Oats & Honey Blend. When the boxes arrived, I had to hide them from my son, who wanted to break into them right away. I held him off for a few days (we had other open cereals) and then we went to town.

We tried the Sweetened Wheat-fuls first. Now, I like this type of cereal (the frosted shredded wheats, or mini-wheats) and so does my son. He loves them, in fact. I used to buy the Kellogg's Frosted Mini-Wheats until I found out that one of the ingredients is high fructose corn syrup. I could spend a whole post on why I avoid HFCS but I won't go into it here. Suffice it to say that when I learned that Kellogg's includes that ingredient in their cereal, I stopped buying.

In checking out Mom's Best Naturals, though, I learned that they "use only the highest quality ingredients. There's nothing artificial, no added saturated fat or hydrogenated oils, no high fructose corn syrup."

OK, great. I'm all for that but I'm also all for something that tastes good and that my family will eat and enjoy. My son could not get enough of the Sweetened Wheat-fuls and, I admit, neither could I. I was snacking on them in the morning. And then I was snacking on them in the afternoon. Just a good tasting cereal.

Next, we tried the Oats & Honey Blend. As much as I like the Sweetened Wheat-fuls type of cereal, I'm not a big flake-type cereal person. But, no matter. I thought that the Oats & Honey Blend was a good version of that type of cereal. My son, on the other hand, loved it even more than the Sweetened Wheat-fuls. So, a win for this family!

There's a little bit more that I liked about Mom's Best Naturals. Their commitment to sustainability and stewardship is remarkable. Here's a description from their web site:

Renewable Energy
We support renewable energy development by purchasing 100% of the electricity consumed by the production of our natural cereals from Windsource®. Windsource® is the US registered trademark of the Public Service Company of Colorado.

Reduce
We have active programs to reduce energy and minimize water use at our Northfield, Minnesota plant. Since 1996, we have reduced the water used to make cereal by 41% and we’ve reduced our energy use by 10%. That adds up to millions of gallons of water and KWh of energy saved through creative conservation.

Re-Use
Over 99% of the waste in our Northfield plant is recycled.

Recycle
We have many recycling programs throughout our company. Our cartons are made from 100% recycled paperboard, minimum 35% post consumer content.

Community Service
“MOM Cares” is an employee funded foundation that has given over 90 grants to help others in our community.

Energy Fair
Each year we host an Energy Fair to inform, educate and inspire our employees and business community.

That's impressive.

Overall, I liked the Mom's Best Naturals cereals and would buy them again.

To buy:

You can find retailers that carry Mom's Best Naturals from their web site here. Packs of 12 boxes of the cereal are also available on Amazon.
