Run Like a Mother review and giveaway

"When all that's left is you and a challenge, running is distilled down to two things: putting one foot in front of the other and summoning a visceral feeling. Not the awful feelings of suffering and resistance as you gut it out, but the one that soars through you and almost carries you when you realize, I've got this." -- from Run Like a Mother.

Sometimes things fall into your life at the perfect time. That's the case with the new book, Run Like a Mother by Dimity McDowell and Sarah Bowen Shea.

Being pregnant with baby #2, I'm feeling even more mother-y than before. And leading a group of new runners, who are all mothers, has me feeling all sorts of runner mother-y. In other words, I'm knee-deep in this "run like a mother" stuff.

So the book. I was fortunate to receive an advance copy to review and even more fortunate to be able to read it over the course of a week filled with sunshine while my son ran around outside like a madman and I sat on the driveway keeping one eye on him and the other on the words in the book.

Run Like a Mother is one of those books that felt like it was written for me. And if you are a mom and a runner, it's written for you.

Bowen Shea and McDowell have a chatty, mom-rific style that is evident from the first few pages when they share a series of emails that led to them writing this book. From there, they go on to fill the book with advice for running moms of all stripes -- advice they are qualified to dispense because much of it is based on their experiences and the experiences of running moms like them.

This isn't a training guide, though. It is more of an inspiring, motivating guide. Reading it, I just wanted to take off and run so I think the motivation part worked. Although, I more-or-less always want to take off and run so maybe I'm not the best judge . . .

Run Like a Mother covers a whole range of topics -- nutrition, trail running, hills, pregnancy, races, clothing, running partners, you name it! -- and does so with honesty and, often, humor. It also includes sidebars called "Take it from a Mother" that offers up a question (What's your ideal racing distance? What's your best cross-training workout?) and provides answers from other running moms.

Honestly, I just loved the book. There was so much in it that spoke to me and I thought it was great. I'll plan to share it with the other moms in the running group I recently started. I think they'll get a lot out of it.

  2. Already a follower on both blogs, and a fan on facebook.

I'm not quite up to mom-dom yet, but my own mother - who has never in her life been or wanted to be athletic - told me last night that reading my blog has inspired her to dip her toe in. I'm not sure what that'll end up looking like, but I'd love to share this book with her.

  6. I would love to win this for a friend of mine. She is the mother to 5 children and one of which is special needs. She runs, like most of us, to stay sane and find her peace and happy time and not loose sight of herself.

  19. I'm a single mom and have been since the munchkin was 1 (she's 10 now). I run for ME and I'd want the book for me. :-) Selfish, maybe, but I had to work hard to take good care of myself... it doesn't come naturally for most of us moms.

  30. And I totally want this for myself. I'm a running mom and can't wait to read Run Like A Mother.

I might be willing to loan it to a fellow running mom but only if she promised - pinkie swear - to return it. :)

  31. I just started outrigger canoeing, and after our first practice lap, they had us run to the lifeguard stand and back.
I've never pursued running as a sport, because I had both my hips replaced several years ago. But ... I could do it! I've dreamed about running, but never thought it was possible. I'd like to start.
Thanks for your offer, and inspiration. I heard about you through your publisher's FB.
    Cheers - Betsy
